In the heart of Big Cypress National Preserve, Bear Island Campground offers an unparalleled camping experience for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike. We recently camped there one night and will for sure be going back to stay for a few days.

This 20 mile long gravel road will shake you to pieces.  30 mph will be considered too fast in some places.

One of the most alluring aspects of Bear Island Campground is its remote location. Accessible via a 20 mile long rugged dirt road, the journey to the campsite feels like an adventure itself, setting the tone for a back-to-basics experience. With no electrical hookups or running water, this campground invites you to reconnect with nature in its purest form. Pack plenty of supplies, including water and a robust tent, as this is a true primitive camping experience.

The campground offers 40 spacious sites, spread out to provide privacy and an immersive nature experience. Whether you’re a solo camper seeking solitude or part of a group ready for shared adventures, Bear Island caters to all. The sites are surrounded by towering cypress trees and lush vegetation, creating a serene and shaded environment.

These photos were shot with our dashcam, so they are a bit muddy. But you can get an idea of just how remote this place is. And you are warned to keep all food stored in a safe place, and to watch for alligators, bears, etc, as they are know to visit the campsites.

Outdoor enthusiasts will relish the opportunity to explore the surrounding trails. Bear Island is renowned for its proximity to the Florida Trail, a 1,500-mile hiking path that winds through the state. The nearby trails vary in difficulty, offering something for everyone, from casual walkers to experienced hikers. As you traverse the paths, keep an eye out for wildlife such as white-tailed deer, alligators, and even the elusive Florida panther.

For stargazers, Bear Island Campground is a hidden gem. The remote location means minimal light pollution, allowing for breathtaking views of the night sky. Gather around the campfire, toast marshmallows, and lose yourself in the celestial display above.
